Marlin Darrah is a world-renowned filmmaker who has traveled to over 140 countries and made over 100 documentary and travel-adventure films. He is known for his daring adventures and his ability to capture the beauty and excitement of the world on film.

Darrah's passion for travel began at a young age. He grew up in small town Oregon, but he was always fascinated by faraway places. As a young teenager he was collecting coins from around the world, and pouring through National Geographic magazines. He spent 3 months playing trombone in a traveling high school band in Europe.

When he was 20 years old, he drove throughout Europe for 12 months in a VW van documenting lives of artists and being invited to stay in the homes of dozens of European hosts. When he was 22, he traveled to India, shooting a couple of early documentaries about social issues in villages there. These early formative adventures set the mold - he knew that he wanted to spend his life exploring the world.

After college, Darrah formally began his filmmaking career. One of his early documentaries told the story of a tribe of hereditary cannibals in New Guinea – in the exact location where anthropologist Michael Rockefeller disappeared and was never seen again. He then made

“Moments of the Runner,” a sports documentary sponsored by Runner’s World magazine, telling the story of the origins of the marathon, and showing major races throughout N. America and Europe. These films were critical and commercial successes, and they launched Darrah's career as an adventure filmmaker.

Over the next 40 years, Darrah traveled to some of the planet’s most remote and dangerous places. He has been chased and robbed by bandits in Brazil, arrested and accused of spying in Cuba, briefly imprisoned in Russia and Egypt, cursed by a witch doctor in Madagascar, knife-attacked by a woman in China and nearly trampled by a charging elephant in Kenya. But through it all, he has never lost his passion for adventure or his ability to capture the beauty of the world on film.

Darrah's films have won more than 170 Best Film, Best Director and other awards at more than 100 film festivals and events in 35 countries. He is a member of the Explorers Club and has presented more than 700 film lectures throughout the country, at Boston’s Harvard Hall, the Geographical Society of Philadelphia, and many others. In 2014, he was knighted by the hereditary King of Portugal for his contributions to filmmaking and education.

His films are a testament to the power of travel and the importance of understanding the world around us.

  • The thin line that barely separates the moral actions of men. Darrah says, “ My movies often explore the deeper psychological motivations and desires of men and women. And especially the circumstances that can cause men in particular – when they find themselves in foreign countries and cultures that they don’t fully understand - to lose their moral compass, and be tempted by the darker elements of their personalities.”
